Rescue, California

Dear Valley Loop
The Heart of Rescue's Historical Community
Zentgraf, the old winery cellar

The Rescue area was settled as early as 1847. The story goes that Andrew Hare was "rescued" from poverty by mining, and named the town Rescue. There are few of the early structures remaining, but the rock walls along the roadside are reminiscent evidence of  "killing two birds with one stone," cleaning land and putting up fences.

The town of Rescue survived the Gold Rush of 1949 and went on to become a thriving community of diversity.
Green Valley road was the established route  to California's El Dorado, bringing the Pony Express and pioneers from as far away as Germany, Denmark, Scotland and Switzerland. Although striking it rich was the motivation for moving out west, a handful of gold seekers would later find raising cattle and cultivating vineyards to be more lucrative.

The Maidu Indians were the only indigenous people to the area. They spent their winters here in Deer Valley, but come summer, would travel with a number of small ponies carrying their supplies to Plunket, 4 miles from Latrobe.

Some of the dwellings still standing, date back to the 1850's, but the majority of livable housing throughout the pine hills of Deer Valley are custom ranch style homes built on 5-10 acres parcels, between the 1980's and 90's.

Rescue is an unincorporated community in El Dorado County, California. It is located 3.5 miles (5.6 km) north-northwest of Shingle Springs, Rescue consists of primarily farmland and ranches with a few residential neighborhoods and businesses. Downtown Rescue is quite small, with only a post office, fire station, two churches and a community center to distinguish it from the more rural areas which include a hidden gem, off a beaten path known as Pine Hill Preserve, which is no more then a curious little bump in the Sierra foothills landscape. From a distance, it looks like any other local hill, noticed more for the crowning collection of communication structures.

But take the time to walk the walk and you will see what makes Pine Hill an exceptional little hill: it is home to a surprising collection of endemic plants that are found in either few or no other places as naturally occurring native plants! In fact most of these Pine Hill specialties were only discovered within the last 40 years.  Concern about these plants became so extreme that in 1996, five of the eight rare plant species of the Pine Hill region were listed as either threatened or endangered by extinction under the Federal Endangered Species Act.
